Looking for an easy Halloween craft with a little surprise? This Spider Surprise Witch Hat Craft is a free printable kids can color, cut, and put together—then use the movable tab to make a little spider drop down from underneath the witch’s hat!
Push the tab down to lower the spider, then pull it back up to make the spider rise again. It’s simple to make, but the moving spider makes the finished craft extra fun to play with.

And a fun fact about this one: my 10-year-old designed it! He came up with the idea for a spider that drops down from a witch hat, and I turned his idea into a printable. I think he came up with a pretty fun one!
What’s Included
The free printable is one 8.5 × 11-inch page with:
- A witch hat to color and cut out
- A spider attached to a movable strip
- A simple tab-and-slot mechanism
- Step-by-step assembly instructions right on the page
Once you put it together, the spider strip slides through the slot in the witch hat. Push it down to drop the spider beneath the hat, then pull it back up to make the spider rise again.
What You’ll Need
This one is nice and simple. You’ll need:
- The free Spider Surprise printable
- Cardstock (recommended) or regular printer paper
- Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
- Scissors
No glue needed!
I recommend printing this one on cardstock if you have it. The extra stiffness helps the moving pieces work a little more smoothly, but it will still work with regular printer paper.
How to Make Your Spider Surprise
First, color and decorate your witch hat and spider however you’d like.
Next, cut out the witch hat, keeping the rectangular tab attached. Cut out the small marked rectangle to create the slot, then fold the tab behind the hat.
Cut out the spider strip and thread it through the slot.
That’s it! Now you can push the strip down to make the spider drop from underneath the witch hat and pull it back up to make the spider rise again.

The printable also has the instructions right on the page, so you can keep them handy while you put everything together.
I especially love that this isn’t just something kids color and then set aside. Once they’re finished making it, they have a little interactive Halloween craft they can play with too.
